So far, the images have a range: A woman wearing a\u00a0mask<\/a>\u00a0and blue plastic gloves. Empty\u00a0streets<\/a>. A pair of\u00a0dogs<\/a>\u00a0in a misty park. The inside of a deserted\u00a0subway car<\/a>. A woman hugging a\u00a0tree<\/a>. Two children with their faces pressed against a\u00a0window<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

The\u00a0International Center of Photography<\/a>\u00a0is collecting a virtual archive of images related to the coronavirus pandemic. Photographers, both professional and otherwise, can share images using the hashtag #ICPConcerned on Instagram. Submissions are also accepted via email at\u00a0socialmedia@icp.org<\/a>. Single images, photo sequences, image-text work, video and audio submissions are all welcome.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

To date, the I.C.P. has received over 3,000 submissions. I.C.P.\u2019s curatorial team of five is reviewing submissions. They post between three and six images per day on the\u00a0@ICP<\/a>\u00a0account.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

The ethos for this project was inspired by\u00a0Cornell Capa<\/a>, the center\u2019s founder and first director, who died in 2008. Mr. Capa coined the phrase \u201cconcerned photographer,\u201d someone who produces \u201cimages in which genuine human feeling predominates over commercial cynicism or disinterested formalism.\u201d<\/p>\n

Established in 1974, the I.C.P. has chronicled wars, social movements and disasters to build an historical archive for future generations. This year,\u00a0it moved to a new home at Essex Crossing<\/a>, the large new Lower East Side development in Manhattan.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Mr. Lubell contrasted this moment with the September 11th attacks, when there was \u201csomething to look at that was quite physical. We could photograph the aftermath of that,\u201d he said. Documenting a virus is more complicated. \u201cHow do you photograph something that is not photographable?\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Mr. Lubell pointed to recent submissions that have highlighted a sense of relationships and interconnectedness between people. \u201cWe\u2019re photographing what we\u2019re missing,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s really a humanitarian response.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
