{"id":2004,"date":"2020-01-14T11:00:26","date_gmt":"2020-01-14T16:00:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/essexcrossingnyc.local\/?p=2004"},"modified":"2020-01-15T09:09:23","modified_gmt":"2020-01-15T14:09:23","slug":"i-c-p-to-reopen-at-essex-crossing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/essexcrossingnyc.com\/?p=2004","title":{"rendered":"I.C.P. to Reopen at Essex Crossing"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"css-exrw3m evys1bk0\">The International Center of Photography will reopen in a four-story, 40,000-square-foot space in the massive new\u00a0<a class=\"css-1g7m0tk\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2019\/11\/07\/arts\/design\/essex-crossing.html\">Essex Crossing<\/a>\u00a0development on the Lower East Side on Jan. 25. It is the fourth location for the museum since its opening in 1974 and brings the exhibition and education spaces under the same roof for the first time this century.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-exrw3m evys1bk0\">\u201cThe drive behind the new building is to put the exhibits, the collection and our students back in dialogue with each other\u201d Mark Lubell, I.C.P.\u2019s executive director, said in an interview on Monday. \u201cThe exhibits will be worked into our curriculum for our more than 3,500 students from around the world in programs ranging from a two-year M.F.A. program to classes for teens and everything in between.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-exrw3m evys1bk0\">The new space will provide significantly more exhibition space than any of the previous sites on East 94th Street and Fifth Avenue,\u00a0<a class=\"css-1g7m0tk\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2014\/01\/31\/arts\/design\/what-is-a-photograph-opens-at-the-icp.html\">West 43rd Street and Avenue of the Americas<\/a>, and<a class=\"css-1g7m0tk\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2017\/10\/09\/arts\/design\/international-center-of-photography-to-move-again.html\">\u00a0the Bowery, near Houston Street<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>It will include media labs, classrooms, darkrooms, public event spaces, a research library, a store and a cafe. The museum galleries will be visible through a glass facade on Essex Street.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-exrw3m evys1bk0\">The Lower East Side is hallowed ground for photography. On Essex Street and in the surrounding area, Jacob Riis and Lewis Hine documented the deplorable living and working conditions there in the wake of the great immigrations of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. A set of images from the neighborhood, culled from I.C.P.\u2019s permanent collection, is one of four exhibitions opening this month, titled \u201cThe Lower East Side: Selections from the I.C.P. Collection.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-exrw3m evys1bk0\">Another of the exhibitions,\u00a0<a class=\"css-1g7m0tk\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.vogue.com\/article\/tyler-mitchell-beyonce-photographer-vogue-september-issue\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tyler Mitchell<\/a>\u2019s solo show \u201cI Can Make You Feel Good,\u201d includes photographs, video and installations that explore black identity. (In 2018, Mr. Mitchell became the first black photographer to shoot the cover of Vogue magazine featuring Beyonc\u00e9.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-exrw3m evys1bk0\">The museum will also display \u201c<a class=\"css-1g7m0tk\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.contacthighproject.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">CONTACT HIGH: A Visual History of Hip-Hop,<\/a>\u201d which examines four decades of contact sheets from photographers documenting\u00a0<a class=\"css-1g7m0tk\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/annenbergphotospace.org\/exhibits\/contact-high\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the hip-hop movement<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-exrw3m evys1bk0\">\u201cWarriors,\u201d a live digital work by James Coupe, inserts images of museum visitors into scenes from the 1979 cult film \u201cThe Warriors\u201d using an algorithm and\u00a0<a class=\"css-1g7m0tk\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2019\/11\/24\/technology\/tech-companies-deepfakes.html\">deepfake<\/a>\u00a0technology.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-exrw3m evys1bk0\">Visual culture has changed radically since I.C.P.\u2019s founding by Cornell Capa in 1974 as a home for \u201cconcerned photography.\u201d Mr. Capa\u2019s intent as a photographer was to make images that would become part of the historical record of his times.
